In March, 2006, we decided to take a break. We are currently on hiatus.

Our San Francisco Bay Area cattery was established in 1994. The kitties have the run of the place, graciously allowing us to share their space! We have a new home for LunarCoons!! Located in the Evergreen Foothills of San Jose, we are enjoying all the new room we have!!

We started as just plain cat lovers with three altered, aloof and charming cats of the moggy variety, one a "bar" cat fathered by the head honcho of the local tavern, and the other a "barn" cat, snatched from the hay beneath the horses feet, the third a shelter kitty, we decided to invite a fourth into our home. At our first show we were introduced to the Maine Coon breed. It was love at first sight! We knew we had to have one.

After shopping many cat shows, talking to any Maine Coon breeder we could find, and visiting all the catteries with kittens available within 400 miles we started to dream of breeding our own beautiful cats. The end of our exhaustive 2 year search has brought our lovely foundation cat.

Maggie, more formally known as Poohcats Magdalena of Lunarcoons is a beautiful, sweet tempered and charming cream classic tabby with white. She sashayed into our home, tail waving from side to side like a feather boa. With her "blue" blood (Maggie's dad is QGC Mymains Mike Malone of Suzeran) and aristocratic ways she had won our "boys" over in no time!

LunarCoons Cattery is a professional hobby pedigreed Maine Coon cat breeding facility, located within our home in San Jose, CA (San Francisco Bay Area). We are dedicated to protecting and promoting the Maine Coon breed. We hold a deep committment to supporting animal welfare in general, and research into the causes and cures of feline illness. A direct result of this committment is our policy of donating 10% of all pet kitten sales, split between the Center for Companion Animal Health at the University of California at Davis, and the Humane Society of Silicon Valley.

Maine Coons (in our humble opinion) are one of the best breeds around: active, affectionate, highly interactive, and devoted. LunarCoons Cattery takes special pride in breeding for health, temperment, and conformation to TICA and CFA breed standards.

We are committed to maintain the emotional and physical health of our breeding adults and kittens as paramount in our breeding program. We believe a great personality is one of the best things about a Maine Coon, and we pay special attention to temperment in developing our familial lines. Our cats are never caged, and kittens are handled and played with daily from birth. We show actively to promote our breeding program and demonstrate conformance to breed standards. We attend mostly TICA shows, but occasionally will show in CFA as well. All our cats and kittens are TICA and CFA registered and sold as show or pet alters with CFA registration papers. Our adult cats receive routine medical care, are tested for FeLV/FIV and vaccinated against FVRCP, are screened for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), polycystic kidney disease (PKD), hip dysplasia (HD) and are OFA certified as fair, good or excellent for hip joint conformation. Our kittens are sold with a guarantee of health and a complete medical and vaccination history.

We are a small cattery, and generally have several litters per year. We screen potential new kitten homes carefully, and place suitable homes on our waiting list. We work with a written sales agreement for our pet kittens, as this protects both of us, but is primarily intended to ensure that your pet will have a long and healthy life. There are several standard provisions included to ensure this goal. LunarCoons Cattery has adopted an early alter program for most of our pet kittens. These kittens are sold with registration papers. For those few kittens that are not altered by the time they are adopted, we require the kitten to be altered by age six months. Upon receipt of a letter signed by a licensed veterinarian that states this requirement has been met, we will provide the animal's registration papers listing you as the registered owner. Second, we require that the kitten never be de-clawed. We feel that this is an unnecessarily cruel procedure, as it involves the amputation of the fingertips at the first knuckle (I really was shocked when I discovered this). Third, our kittens are raised as healthy indoors-only cats. Not only does the "great outdoors" pose extreme risks to the cat that outweigh the negligible benefits, but also pedigreed cats are at a higher risk for theft. Maine Coons are happy even in small homes or apartments, as long as adequate toys and attention are provided, and are easily trained to use a scratching post.

We encourage you to read further about the Maine Coon cat, there are some interesting links on our Cat Sites page. If you'd like to inquire further about pet kittens, please contact us at the address below. Enjoy your visit to our site, and we hope you'll stop back soon!
